I wrote this book to serve two purposes. As the title suggests, I meant it to be a basic guide, an introduction to the art for the inexperienced photographer wishing to produce quality photographs. Many of the photography textbooks I have read over the years are too technical and make too much use of trade jargon. Unfortunately many beginners might as well be reading ancient Greek. Others tell us far more than we want to know about the technical aspects of photography; the camera and other hardware, but fall short on the other side, the creative side of photography.

The goal of this text is to show how to use the basic tools of photography in simple, non-technical language, while not forgetting the creative aspect of photography. Having taught photography for many years, I learned that plain language and illustrations get the message across easily. With that in mind, this text is written in an informal, conversational manner, with about 140 illustrations and photographs.

The second purpose is to get beyond the basics and learn how to produce photos which are memorable. With that in mind, I included a chapter on photographic seeing and composition, as well as detailed instructions as, precisely as possible, in the techniques I use to produce my internationally exhibited images.

This text is unusual, in that rather than going through traditional publishing, it is being published in digital form. This experiment offers a couple of advantages to the reader. It can be ordered as a CD. The major advantage is cost, with the 35 meg CD priced at $21.95, including shipping and handling. A paper version will be available in the future.

And by the way, about 140 diagrams and photos are there as illustrations to help make various points clear and with detailed instructions as to how they were made.
